My Study Habits

Phase 1 of my IS101 class has been full of ups and downs throughout the semester.  I started out being one of the only people who didn't do the first bonus quiz. It took me a while before I hit my stride, but eventually I was able to catch up.  That was until I went out of town for a weekend and allowed myself to fall behind again.  After a week of cramming, I caught up once again and received a perfect score on my Microsoft Word exam.  Now that I am comfortable with my assignments I have used my sporadic motivation to get too far ahead to fall behind and plan to continue this trend.

I found assignment 4.7.4 very interesting because I wasn't even aware that it was a feature.  This lesson taught me the use of a 3D model in Microsoft Word.  I found it very useful to bring an extra dimension into the paper that could be used to showcase a 3D model.

Although I have already taken the MO-110 exam, I am still very excited about the upcoming Excel exam.  I believe the Excel Exam will be much more useful to my career.  I hope to be a CPA one day, and navigating Excel will be a very important skill along my journey.

To close out this post, I would like to share a method of study that helps me, and is likely to help others similar to me.  I have recently been setting a 5-minute timer when I begin an assignment that allows me to opt out of continuing once the timer is up.  It sounds very counterintuitive, but the idea is that usually starting an assignment is the hardest part.  Very rarely do I get 5 minutes into the assignment and want to give up, so it has helped me get started, and it is seemingly downhill from there.

  1. It's not how you start but how you finish. Keep up your current stride to finish IS101-3205, Spring 2025 strong!

    4.7.4 3D Model is interesting indeed ^_^

Thank you for sharing your 5-minute method, Conner :-)

  2. Hey Conner,

Your post was super relatable! It’s great how you bounced back from falling behind, twice, and still nailed a perfect score on the Word exam. That’s seriously impressive and shows your persistence. I’ve been in the same boat with motivation coming in waves, so your approach of getting ahead while the energy is there makes a lot of sense.

I also thought the 3D model feature in 4.7.4 was really cool. I didn’t even know Word could do that either! It opens up some fun possibilities for more creative projects.

Also, best of luck with the Excel exam! That’s awesome that you’re working toward becoming a CPA — Excel is going to be a huge tool for you, and it’s great that you’re already thinking ahead. ^-^

  3. It sounds like you’ve really persevered through some challenges, and congrats on that perfect score on your Microsoft Word exam! I love your study method with the 5-minute timer—it's a great trick to get past that initial resistance. Section 4.7.4 sounds interesting too; 3D models in Word can definitely add a unique touch. Best of luck with the Excel exam, and your CPA journey—it’s such an important skill to have! I also plan to give your method of focusing on one thing at a time a try—staying on track and overcoming procrastination is something I need to work on as well.

  4. I think the up and downs of school challenges us to be better. If you can conquer the downs, then the ups are a nice reward. The 3D models were a pleasant surprise because it adds a little flare to the document. That is quite an interesting way to stay on track, but if it works it works.

  7. Hi Conner! The 3-D Model was also quite a cool feature and added some dimension to the document! I hope you had fun during your trip, even if it meant falling behind for a bit, but hey, you got it done! I might have to use that tip, sometimes I find myself in that stump as well, so thanks for the advice!

  8. Hello Conner!

Congrats on the perfect score. That’s a dope accomplishment you for sure soaked up the information and crushed the exam.

Your 5-minute method is very interesting, and the way you feel is how I feel towards a certain assignment in my psychology class where I must read 10 articles and do an annotated autobiography on the 10 articles I’ve read. The reading part annoys me, but your method might help. Thank you.

I also thought the 3D model feature in 4.7.4 was super cool it’s not something I knew about either. That study trick with the 5-minute timer is genius! Starting is always the hardest part, and I’m definitely going to give that a try. Best of luck with the Excel exam and your CPA journey you’re on a great path!

  10. Conner, it no easy task to get caught up in assignments after falling behind, especially with IS101, so great job to you! I also went out of town for a week but luckily it was during our Spring recess so I didn't fall too behind. I have never thought about giving myself an out after starting an assignment, so that's an interesting thought. You definitely are right that the hardest part of the assignment is getting started! Great tip!
