(A) Hello, and welcome to my blog. My name is Conner Spooner, and I am a sophomore at the College of Southern Nevada. I have lived in Las Vegas since I was 5 and graduated from Palo Verde High School in 2023. My hobbies include snowboarding, hiking, camping, and traveling. I have gained a greater appreciation for these activities since my ability to participate has been hindered for the last couple of years. This year was the first year since 2022 that I could snowboard since I tore my labrum the previous time I did, alongside an ACL tear I endured earlier in the year playing soccer. 3 years later, I am about 80% healed, and in the second-best shape, I've been in my lifetime, with aspirations to only get better. These two life-impacting injuries resulted in me adopting a lifestyle centered around an appreciation for the aspects of life we often take for granted. One of these blessings is my ability to get a higher education, and I look forward to my IS101 class.
(B) I didn't know what Information Systems were when I enrolled in the class. I took the class because it is a requirement for my degree, and I got very excited when I realized it revolves around computers and Microsoft Office applications. This is because we are entering a society where if you refuse to expand your knowledge of computers, you will get left behind. I see it already with my little brother. He is 14 years old, and he can navigate around his laptop much better than I due to having more exposure. It was a huge red flag when I came to this realization because it showed how incompetent I may seem in the job market if I don't get up to speed.
(C) I have already been pleasantly surprised in this class and learned the reason behind something I have been doing for years. I used to play a lot of video games when I was in high school, and with anything that involved technology, I was often met with technical difficulties. Occasionally, I would encounter a recurring issue where my game couldn't finish its startup. At some point, I learned to clear the game's cache, and it would shortly resolve my problem. This week, I realized that this cleared my issue because my game files got corrupted, and clearing the cache removes the temporary corrupted files.
Glad your are 80% healed, may you reach 100%, Conner!
ReplyDeleteI love your excitement and realization for IS101-3205, Spring 2025. May you convert the red flag into a strength :-)
So the first few weeks have already cleared up a mystery for you on technical difficulties you faced when you used to play video games? May the rest of our semester together elevate your digital literacy higher ^_^
Hey Conner! It’s great to hear that you’re recovering and getting back to doing what you love injuries like that are no joke, but your mindset of appreciating life’s blessings is really inspiring. IS101 has definitely been eye-opening for a lot of us, and I totally agree staying tech-savvy is essential in today’s world. That’s awesome that you made the connection between clearing cache and fixing corrupted files it’s cool when everyday experiences start making more sense! Looking forward to learning alongside you this semester! ^-^
ReplyDeleteHello Conner! I have never tried snowboarding, but I was a skater in my youth. I started skating when I was 7 years old and stopped when I was 17 because I started doing other hobbies, but being able to clear 8 stairs and street skating was the way before they started to make skateparks more accessible in Southern California. One thing I don't miss is getting injured. I know how that goes! Hopefully, you will recover quickly and be back at 100% to enjoy the sport again. I feel you when it comes to technology. I wish I had stayed current with it, and now, seeing the younger generation booming in this field is insane. I just like you need to catch up. We'll both get this down.
ReplyDeleteHi Conner! I'm glad to hear that you are recovering well from your injuries! I also enjoy hiking and traveling. It's such a great experience to travel and learn new cultures and hiking to new views. Staying current with technology and having an understanding of different software and systems is so important, especially in the job market like you mentioned. I wish you all the success in IS101 and your other courses!
ReplyDeleteIt is not too often you meet someone who is native to Las Vegas, but being here since the age of 5 is pretty close. I can't imagine the anxiousness of getting back out on the mountain after sustaining multiple injuries. I hope you got to enjoy yourself thoroughly. My youngest daughter amazes me as well with how she navigates electronics with ease.
ReplyDeleteHey Conner! Those are great outdoor activities you listed as your favorite hobbies. I’m glad you’re recovering well and were able to get out and snowboard this year. Throughout this course, I bet you can teach your little brother some tips and tricks you’ve learned to help improve his digital literacy. Thank you for providing an example and solution you used to troubleshoot your game not starting up. I haven't experienced this issue yet, but I will keep this in mind if it ever occurs.
ReplyDeleteHello Conner, I am someone who has a hard time navigating through a computer. It is essential that we are competent enough to navigate through a computer as it is a general skill that many possess. The more we familiarize ourselves with it the more we’ll learn. Hope you are fully recovered soon.
ReplyDeleteHi Conner!
ReplyDeleteIf you are into soccer, may I ask what soccer team you support? My brother is a big Barcelona fan, but I think even bigger Messi fan, so as his little sister, by default, I too support Barcelona.
I feel the exact same way when it comes to computers. Surprisingly enough, my father is literally a pro when it comes to computers and I feel like I too am falling behind when it comes to my knowledge of it as well.
Hope that your video games don't keep getting interrupted by cache, glad to hear you were able to fix that!
Hello Conner! I'm so glad to hear that you are recovering well and that your passion for snowboarding and other activities hasn't been stopped by your past injuries. It is inspiring to see how you've turned such tough experiences into a source of motivation. That kind of resilience and determination will definitely serve you well, both in class and whatever you pursue next. Best of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteHey Conner! I’m glad you are slowly healing from your life-changing injuries. My sister tore her ACL from soccer as well. She has been recovering for over a year now, but she says she’s still not fully recovered and doesn’t feel comfortable kicking the ball. You made an interesting comment about how you cleared your cache when gaming, and it's cool to see that the skills and knowledge we are developing are not just limited to these apps, we can use them on other electronics.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear your recovery is going well, and I hope to see you at 100 percent soon!
ReplyDeleteHey Conner,
ReplyDeleteYour journey of overcoming injuries and getting back into snowboarding is truly inspiring! It’s great to see you embracing new opportunities, including IS101. Tech skills are crucial today, and your realization about your younger brother is a great motivator to stay ahead.
The connection between clearing a game’s cache and fixing corrupted files is a cool insight! It’s awesome when we finally understand why something works. Looking forward to hearing more about your learning journey!
Hey Conner! Your story is super inspiring—coming back from those injuries and pushing yourself to be even better is really impressive! It’s awesome that you’ve found a new appreciation for the little things, and I bet that mindset will take you far. IS101 sounds like it’s already giving you some cool insights, and I totally get what you mean about keeping up with technology—it changes so fast! Can’t wait to hear more about what you learn in the class. Keep crushing it!
ReplyDeleteHey Conner,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that you got injured and it held you back from being able to do what you love, but I'm so happy for you that you're getting back to doing what makes you happy! I used to play football and injured my back when I was in middle school and have had a really bad back since then, so I totally fell your pain. Stay positive and keep working forward and I hope you make a full recovery!
Hi Conner, although unfortunate events happen in our lives, we learn and adapt and also learn to appreciate life itself. Its great that you are recovering well from your injury. Learning about technology and how to operate it is an important skill to learn in this day in age, especially since our daily lives revolve around using computers.
ReplyDeleteHello Conner, sounds like taking a break from all those activities was a good choice, you still have healing to complete to be back at 100%. The same thing happened to me with this class, I honestly had no idea what it was, my advisor just gave me a list of classes I need to complete and I chose this one because it worked with my schedule. First day of class I realized it was about Microsoft Office applications and I was happy. I already knew some knowledge from long time ago but I was rusty, also I didn’t know much about Excel and PowerPoint.
ReplyDeleteHi Conner,
ReplyDeleteI played soccer for most of my childhood. I am glad you are on a path of recovery and wish you the best. Being able to walk is a blessing. Having the opportunity to go to school is also important. I was born in Las Vegas, and I go to the CSN right next to Palo Verde High School.
Hi Conner! I really relate to your story. I didn't have any injury in physical activities but I had an injury that made it very hard for me to do anything active, still takes a toll on me sometimes. To see you redirect yourself and still fight to recover is something that I know personally how hard it can be and honestly you should be proud of yourself for your progress. They say "never give up without a fight" and I totally agree.
